Reply to the question about rooting hormones available in the US:
There was a request for information about the contents
- IAA
has never been registered for use in the US. It has some applications for
rooting yucca and a few other difficult to root varieties. The only use in
the US is for tissue cell propagation (micro propagation). The TC
laboratories purchase IAA from lab chem suppliers.
- NAA
there are no registered sources for NAA by itself ... NAA is almost always
mixed with another rooting hormone IBA. There are some applications for NAA
by itself, such as rooting wisteria. We have a technical product called
Rhizopon B Water Soluble Tablets (10% NAA) which is used for research
purposes only. This product is mixed with water to make solutions.
Two NAA products registered in the US which contain NAA and IBA are
DipNGrow and Woods.
- IBA
this is the primary rooting hormone used in the US. IBA is used for most
plant varieties which are rooted from cuttings. IBA is available in either
powders (mixed with talc) for use by the dry dip method or made into
solutions for liquid application.
We have dry dip powders in three concentrations:
Rhizopon AA #1 (0.1% IBA), Rhizopon AA #2 (0.3% IBA), Rhizopon AA #8 (0.8%
IBA), and
pre-dosed tablets to make solutions using water called Rhizopon AA Water
Soluble Tablets (20% IBA) used by spray, total immerse and basal dip.
Other IBA products registered in the US are Hormo-Root, Hormex, Hormodin.
There are a few other brands some of which are private labeled from the
primary registrants.
Rhizopon is available from most horticultural suppliers. if they do not
have it in stock they can order from the master distributor:
V-J Growers Supply (800-327-5422) or you can order from them directly.
Another product, Rootone, contains several ingredients other than the three
above. As far as I know this product is not packaged for commercial use.
For information about the various products registered in the US under the
law called FIFRA go the US EPA web site at
http://www.epa.gov/internet/oppts/
From there you can learn more than you would ever want to know about the
registration of plant growth regulators such as rooting hormones ... and
the various products.
For information about plant hormones go the archieves of the plant homrones
email group at
http://www.plant-hormones.bbsrc.ac.uk/
This is a research oriented group ... you are always welcome to ask questions.
If you have specific or general questions about the rooting of plant
cuttings and the selection of the proper method and products please email
me directly (private)
