Re: gaillardia Goblin


Goblin is reasonably true to type from seed, although it depends on your
source (Benary -- look for the Blue Point seed -- is generally the best). 
I've seen three generations of isolation and selection on Goblin.  There is
still plenty of variability there, and you can select in almost any
direction.  If you are saving seed, try and isolate the best all-around
plants and take seed on them NEXT year, after letting the best intercross. 
There's so much junk underneath the surface that just saving Goblin seed
without roguing really hard will cause varietal drift to occur pretty
quickly.  That's why Benary (the originator) has the best seed.  

I suspect that this is one of those species in which the best seed quality
is going to result from production in dry areas.  Or at least in areas
where the late summers are dry, when the seed is maturing.  I've had
difficulty producing good seed in PA.
