I have succeeded in grafting trumpet vine on catalpa using C-mone K+
.The scion was cut in winter, stored in the refrigerator until spring ,
I trimmed it for a saddle graft, soaked it in a very dilute solution of
the above hormone, put it back in the frig for a couple weeks til the
weather got warmer, did the graft and WAITED! The graft calloused but
just sat there. It did not start growing until the weather really warmed
up. The shoots are now about three feet long. My attempts in past years
(minus hormone) always failed because the extremely thin cambium of the
vine failed to generate new cells. I am currently trying one year old
stems cut now(July 6) quick dipped in 5000 ppm, inserted 7 foot up on a
1-1/2 inch caliper catalpa. If this can be easily repeated, it would
make it possible to create standards of select trumpet vine without the
NASTY rampant suckering seen with Campsis.
