Re: Clerodendrums

George-

So you have rooted these in water - I would have never thought of that....I'm
willing to try anything at this point. I've been taking cuttings (4-6") -
soft wood, semi-ripe wood and hard wood over the past year trying to root
these in a medium of equal portions of vermiculite and perlite. I stip the
bottom of the stem completely of foliage only leaving 2-4 leaves - if the
leaves are big I will cut these by half. The cuttings keep their leaves for
awhile and then just eventually die off. I do have a misting system in my
greenhouse that I keep them under.

I've never tried the softwood in the water - I think I will try that today.
It is very warm at this time 95 degrees usually - If I am unsuccessful this
round I will certainly try the water method in the fall when the temps are
cooler. Or I guess I could try them in the house in water on the window sill
- we keep the temp inside around 75-76 degrees during the day and 72 degrees
at night.

Since I have had these two clero's in the ground we have (ironically) had
very mild winters....I fear that a hard winter is approaching and if I do not
have success with these cuttings I could loose my treasured clero's. I have
C. ugandense in the ground and C. quadriloculare is a whiskey barrel (1/2)
which cannot be moved due to weight and the fear of it falling apart. The C.
quad is huge and very beautiful but I have yet to see him bloom. I'm hoping
this fall he will give me a show. (P.S. I took 3" cuttings of the C. quad.
two weeks ago (soft wood) and put them in my medium and they are still alive
so far)

George - thanks for the information and should I have success with these
cuttings I will surely post my results.

Happy Gardening
