clay

"wet feet". I've added huge amounts of compost, peat, and sand, but the
clay apparently needs *much* more of these things. More than I can
afford.
I've made the decision to toss aside deposits of pure clay. (Who
knows; maybe someday I'll get back into pottery.)
As for the clay that clearly has humus mixed in: Is it possible to
separate out the clay? I read somewhere of a test to determine the
sand, loam, and clay content of soil. You mix soil and water, and then
stop stirring. Two minutes later, the sand and loam will have settled
to the bottom. A day later, the clay will settle. (Or have I got the
order mixed up?)
I hope to drain off the water and clay layer and have good soil
left. Will this work?
