Re: basic question re seedlings

Here goes a very unscientific response.

You didn't say anything about the weather conditions. Here we have had a
most unusual spring -- first very cold and wet, then summer hot, and now
very cool again -- some say due to El Nino.

My vegetable seedlings have behaved very strangely, and I've never had
problems before. The seedlings remained smaller than normal for a long
time, and I think I also may have overwatered a bit for the cool
conditions. I lost one tomato seedling in a pot and another after
planting, even though I have watered and fed as usual. If you feel you
may have overwatered, you may want to try watering/feeding by misting
the leaves instead of soaking the soil, to give the roots a chance to
develop.

If your seedlings are very close together, remember not to pull them out
when thinning -- you can damage the roots of surrounding plants. Snip
them off at soil level or just below the soil.
