Re: collecting hosta seeds

I understand that Hostas don’t grow true from seed. For that reason going
through the chore or (joy) of hand pollinating would be useless - you won’t
get a baby that resembles the parent plant(s).

Most Hostas set seed (not all do, some are infertile) and the seed is easy to
collect. These can be sown but the babies will all look different. What were
the results of the purchased seed you started?

A good (and interesting) experiment would be to collect lots of seed from one
Hosta and see how many of the babies look alike or resemble the parent plant.

One other note about growing Hosta from seed is that they benefit from 24
hours of light. Evidently if you grow them under constant lights they will
grow 3 times faster. Keep potting up and in one year you will notice, on most
of them, what normally would be a three year growth.

And - if you are lucky enough to get a unique plant (evidently out of hundreds
of seed grown) you can name it, register it and put the big price tag on
it!!! Good Luck!!!
