Hi,
I got information about this list off the perennials list and never one
to pass up a good list, here I am!
As an intro, I am a 54 year old gardener living on a farm in Montana
just west of Billings. We are zone 4 in climate although some years are
up a zone or down one. Our soil is deep clay loam that can grow
wonderful plants if you can get the seeds past the crust! We use lots of
composted manure to correct that and rely on irrigation from the
Yellowstone River during the summers. Our annual percipitations runs
about 17" per year. As of right now, we are at around 6". So I pull
hoses a lot from place to place. I have a lot of perennial beds, a large
yard of grass (actually 2 yards) and a huge veggie garden which I can
and freeze out of. My husband does the veggies and the grass plus is the
handy man with the hoe for the flower beds.
I started gardening when I was an adolescent. At 12 I had a lovely
tomato patch growing. I was so proud of it. Then a hailstorm made green
mush out of it. I sat on the porch and bawled about it for hours. Sort
of discouraged me for awhile, but I got back into the swing of it later
when I lived with my sister. I was very proud of the wild bluebells (a
type of penstemon) that we moved from the cattle pastures to her
semi-wild yard on the ranch. They did very well for a long time. Then I
got married, moved to Montana and really got into the gardening thing. I
used to plant only flower seed. Never bought plants. Then a few years
ago, I discovered perennials and plants and didn't plant seed! Now I'm
back to doing both. But I want to grow more than just annuals from seed.
I also want to learn more about growing from cuttings, root cuttings,
division, layering etc. So my next postings will be plant specifics.
Thanks for listening and I look forward to reading more from you all.
