helleborus

Here's a question for the truly botanical: I just collected some seed from my
helleborus argutifolius. They were quite ripe; some of the pods had split
open and the contents fallen out, and a couple needed just a little help to
open up. I used my thumbnail to open the pods so that the seeds could fall
out and afterwards noticed a burning sensation under the nail, similar to what
one might experience from a jalapeno pepper. What caused this? I know that
members of the buttercup family are poisonous, but it never occurred to me
that they might be caustic.

I'm just curious and would like more information from anyone who happens to
know. Thank you.
