Re: bamboo

Only some bamboos are invasive. Many bamboos are clumping (not running)
types that are well behaved. These clumping bamboos are also dividable.
Many people are experimenting with tissue culture of bamboo because it
would produce more plants. Bamboos have a strange and infrequent blooming
cycle. It seems they bloom in about every hundred years or more or less, and
that they usually die when they bloom. A species will bloom all over the
world at once, too, which is bizarre. Occasionally stress causes a single
plant to bloom. But mostly it is a worldwide occurrence. Point is, you
don't want to wait for seed to come your way. When you divide your plants
the top may or may not die back, but don't worry, this is common. Within a
few years in good care you will have many robust plants soon enough again.
Bamboo is a fascinating group of plants. It is one of the best building
materials in the world. There was an incident in Japan where a skyscraper
was being built. The Japanese always use bamboo scaffolds to work on their
buildings. The building collapsed within and the bamboo scaffold remained.
How's that for tough?!
