Sounds like a centaurea, maybe C. montana or Mountain bluet, if the flowers
are about 3 in. wide and blue. If they are purple it might be C. nigra (its
flowers are smaller. Or an annual form C. moschata , Sweet Sultan, which has
bigger flowers, pinky-purple.
