Re: kentucky coffeetree


I remember this one from a horticulture class (unmentionable) years ago. 
You have to use a file or sharp knife and make a nick all the way through
the seed coat so the seed will take up water.  Then it will go ahead and
germinate.  I've since wondered if the seed would respond to the treatment
used for honeylocust seed.  Bring some water to a boil, take it off the
heat, and put the seed in.  Let the seed sit in the cooling water for about
20 minutes.  This will soften the seed coat enough that the seed germinates
like beans when planted.
