Greetings P.M. would be nice to know first names here unless you like
using your initials ;-)
Not much is easier than germinating Hippeastrum (amaryllis) seed. From my
experiences with the genus......
Separate the plump seed, those containing embryos, from the small distorted
(aborted) seed.
Sow it IMMEDIATELY upon the capsule splitting...do not let them dry out as
this greatly increases the time for germination. The seed also does not
have a very long shelf life if dried and kept warm.
Use any well drained potting mix, though I will add a pinch of lime to peat
based media as many Hippeastrum do better if the soil is not too acidic.
I space the seed out so they do not touch, this allows them to grow a year
and develop a small bulb.
Cover lightly, mostly to keep them moist....water well, keep warm...70 to
80 deg.F and wait. If the seed was fresh first emergence will occur within
10 days.....if the seed dried then it will take longer...up to a month.
Fertilize regularly and keep growing for the first two years...do not allow
to dry out and go dormant. I keep my parent hybrids growing year round and
they bloom once or twice a year. Some species are evergreen and others go
dormant regardless of care.
>From seed to flower it usually takes at least 3 years....sometimes up to 5
if they don't receive good care.
Good luck!

Does anyone know what to do with amaryllis seeds? After pollinating mine a
few months ago, I ended up with hundreds of brown packets, each with a seed
inside. Is there any special method for germinating them? Will they grow at
all?
