I understand Gail's method, and I've often used fine sand myself. My
problem comes with transplanting -- how do you know when those small
seedlings are ready to transplant. And how do you actually do the
transplanting on such tiny plants (the mechanics of it), what instruments
do you use and what kind of medium to you put them into? I always seem to
bruise the seedlings and/or the roots and then I loose them immediately.

 Thanks!

Rudimentary as it is, I could not be without my finely sharpened pencil ! I
use it as an extension of my hand. Rarely ever do I even touch the soil (
probably a good thing with the three runny noses I'm constantly wiping all
day....) I use the pencil to *pry* away the soil from the transplant, while
I'm holding scurely to one of the leaves of the seedling. After gently
*pulling* the seedling from the pot, I use the pencil to poke a hole into the
*receiving* pot. Then I take the seedling ( still having NOT let go ) ,
position it's small root above the hole and use the pencil tip to direct it
into the hole, using a slight dragging motion, on the way up from the hole ,
to ensure that the root has stayed down there. Then I use the pencil tip to
push the soil next to the root and voila ! transplant complete.
