[Fwd: Re: John Innes]

You are thinking of Calceolaria
'John Innes'.
This is one one those British terms we cannot associate with because the
only mixes old in the U.S.do not have generic names except for peat-lite
mix.
It would be nice if someone could compare mixes so we could associate
the texture of the 'John Innes' mixes with familiar mixes while reading
British books My favorite mix is Metro -mix 500. It is 25-35%
vermiculite, 15-20% Sphagnum, 10-20% bark ash and 40-45% composted bark
ash. It is far superior to Pro-mix for about half the price. You don't
have the problem of too much water absorbtion from overwatering that you
do with Pro-mix. It is just right for seed germination and general
potting soil. Of coarse it must be amended for alpines with sand,
pumice or whatever.
