I recently wrote to T&M outlining my disappointing germination results with
several varieties of their seed. In my letter, I told them the number
sown, the conditions under which I attempted to germinate the seeds, and
the number of resulting seedlings. My germination rates included 0%
(Datura meteloides 'Evening Fragrance,' which should have been easy;
Sparaxis tricolor, ditto); 1% (Lobelia tupa, which I had grown before from
non-T&M seed with much better success); and 16% (Meconopsis betonicifolia).
Only one variety in my order, Helichrysum cassinianum 'Tanner's Pride',
gave decent (70%) germination. I got back a very nice letter from one of
their staff horticulturists, who apologized for the problems and offered an
extensive set of germination instructions that differed in many respects
from the instructions printed on the packets. For example, she suggested
that Datura requires a higher germ. temp. than the packet says -- 70-75 as
opposed to 60-65 deg. F. Likewise, she suggested a prechill for Lobelia
tupa, while the packet makes no mention of this. Along with her letter
came a complete set of replacement seed; I'm now trying the revised
techniques to see if they yield any better results. I will say I was
impressed with the care their horticulturist took over her letter to me,
and can't fault their customer service dept. for the speed with which they
replaced the seeds, but I can't help thinking it would be better business
for them to print the correct germination info on the seed packets in the
first place!
