Dawn,
When I had only a few cannas I used to start them inside in the
spring, since they are so eager to grow. My roots are kept in the
basement in black garbage bags and are now pushing to be released. I
will keep them alive by sprinkling some water in the bags and plant
them outside around the last day of frost, which is May 17 here in
northeastern Ohio (zone 5). I divide in the spring when planting. Dig
them up after the leaves have been damaged by frost in the fall.
As an experiment I left some tubers in the ground last fall and
covered the bed with 15" of decomposing horse manure. I wish the
tubers survive. It would save me a lot of hard work.
Good luck,
Eva
