Dawn asked:
>When should over wintered canna bulbs be planted in my NY garden?
After all danger of frost is over and the ground and air have warmed up.
This is May for me and might be later for you...about the same time you'd
set out tomato plants, if you grow them.
>When should they be dug up?
Dig them up after the first hard frost has blackened the foliage - you will
know as it will look like damp rags hanging on stalks. Cut the dead
foliage off a couple of inches from the rhizome, but look at it first to
make sure you're not cutting off a healthy growth point.
>Should I divide them in spring or fall?
I generally do this in spring when I can see what has survived the winter
storage...you will have some rot and some dried up bits, no matter what you
store them in. So, when you get ready to either pot them up for early
growth or plant them out, go over the clumps and cut off any black or
shriveled bits and split any rhizomes that look too big to plant easily -
they often break apart if you shake them good to get the adhering soil off.
While little bits with a growth point will often grow, it's best to have
nice sized pieces with several growth points - makes a better show in the
garden, IMO.
>Thank you in advance.
You're most welcome ;-)
