Last year I planted what seems to be a really common one, Pixwell.  I see now that it doesn't exactly get rave reviews, but I know that they'll live here anyway.  I remember my grandfather telling me that he had a lot of goosberries and currants.  He passed away 14 years ago, but I stopped by the old farm stead the other day and I see that there is still at least one goose berry plant around.

Late fall would be the best time to take cuttings?

Pretty easy to propagate also, usually just shove a cutting into some soil, keep it from drying out and they usually root. Cut the stems down to 6 to 10 inches, remove lower leaves and reduce the leaves to just a few at the tip. Do not even use rooting powder.
