We grow lots of Banksia species here to look at leaf morphology. Sow thinly
on a very well drained mix, lightly cover. We use bottom heat and take them
off the mist after germination to prevent damping off, and we haven't had
any trouble. B. menseizii is quite a hard one, though. Pot them up in a
mix with low phosphorous fertiliser, that's important. I can give recipes
if you want, but we just use the standard stuff.
We get best results with fresh seed. Extract from the cones by applying
heat- either in an oven or fire. We dip cones in metho and set fire to
them- the cones open and the seed germinates really well after that.
Hope this helps.
