Germinating Amaryllis Seed

Hi Steve,
Hippeastrum seed (amaryllis) is very easy if sown immediately upon the
capsule opening. I lay them in a pot of all purpose potting soil, cover
about 1/4 inch, water and put under my fluorescent lights where they are
warm. They are usually up within two weeks. Only plant the seeds that have
a noticeable swelling in them. The thin papery ones that have no bulge in
the middle typically contain aborted embryos and thus won't germinate.

If seed is allowed to dry out it begins to loose viability rapidly as do
most members of the Amaryllidaceae. Dried seed takes a month or more to
germinate if it does at all in my experience.

Good luck.

Scott
