Re: Papaya

Does any one know what I need to do to start a papaya

On a whim I purchased a water stained packet of Rainforest papaya seeds
from an Ernest store. One side of the seed packet said they were dwarf
while the other side said to control size with pot size. Neither Hortus
Third nor RHS Plant Guide lists a dwarf species of Papaya.
By the time I got around to sowing these seeds they were old. So I
poured boiling hot water on the seeds; soaked the seeds overnight in the
water. The seeds were then placed in a 2 oz cup with equal amounts of
seed and vermiculite on a heat pad. They germinated and produced five
healthy seedlings that went into the fall in individual 4" pots.
They were in a window with maximium winter sunlight--whatever that
means in the Pacific Northwest. They were also in the warmest room in
my house, 55 degree nights, 50% humidity.
One by one they all succumbed to cold damage.
Better luck to all of you.
Best, Vicki
