The burst lengths and intervals between bursts vary with temperature,
light, and any wind (if outdoors mainly). These are changing throughout
the 24 hrs. So you can have complete control with a light sensor
and a "leaf" (a device to maintain a film of water on the leaves of your
cutting)
or you can have a couple of cheap clocks, one to shut the mist down at
night,
the other in series to give say a 5sec burst every ten minutes. The first
method
would cost close to $500, the latter a tenth of that. A cheapish addition
is to put a cut off valve, (cigarette sized) that will stop drips when the
solenoid
shuts. The Israelis make several kinds for say a dollar each.
Useful tips - let the srays cross, that is sprayers 70mm. between
centres - try to keep the leaves just moist but the peat not sodden - keep

the bursts short so that you avoid run-off , the leaves should never get so
wet
that they drip - don't use hormones automatically, its good for rather
woody cuttings - have the sprayers upright above the tube and not
suspended
 upside-down beneath it. Experiment.
If you get a controller that uses a "leaf" you will have to keep cleaning
it if you
have chalky water.
But the answer to your"What is a good interval?" is anywhere
between 6secs. every halfhour (at night) and 3sec. every three minutes (by
day in California)!
Hope that helps! Hugo Latymer latymer@ctv.es
