Re: Potatoe

I did some experiments last year with supermarket potatoes, trying
several varieties, prompted by our love for baby new potatoes which are
so hard to find in the stores here.

I had very good results from small white potatoes called "creamers" at
our local market. I put several potatoes in a dark cupboard to sprout,
and when the sprouts were about an inch long, I planted them in rich
soil, some in large pots and, later, when the garden was ready, some in
the ground. I placed them sprout side up and covered them just barely
with soil, leaving room to "earch up" as the plants grew taller. It
took about ten weeks to get the small, new potatoes I was looking for.
Of course, they can be left to grow larger.

I did not have good results with Yukon gold, but will try again next
year. I generally had good results from white potatoes.

A question for other potato growers. I did have one group of potatoes
in the ground (I'm afraid I didn't document which variety this was),
which grew beautiful, healthy plants but yielded no potatoes! Does
anyone know what could have gone wrong?

I also plan to keep better records next year.

 Pat
