This sounds like the native Chiltipin. It goes by other names such as Bird
Pepper, maybe because the birds eat it and new plants sprout from the seeds
contained in the bird droppings. Chile petin or Chile pequin are other
names it's known by here in Texas. It is a very hot pepper that grows on
sometimes perennial bushes in fields at the edge of an oak grove, so they
get a little shade. The fruit is almost round to slightly oval about the
size of a green pea. They are easy to start, although since the
mockingbirds, cardinals and bluebirds eat them I usually only have to dig
up seedlings to get new plants to give away or to plant elsewhere.

Here in Texas every diner has a bottle of hot vinegar on the table filled
with Chiltipin peppers and white vinegar. When the vinegar is used up more
is added. I usually make a new bottle about once a year since the peppers
do get used up. Both green and red stages are used, but the red is the most
attractive.
