Dear Heather:
I start seeds that need room temperature or greater in a room
behind my greenhouse that is easier to keep heated in winter. Many
plants prefer 70 degrees without any light. But the ones that need
light I place beneath fluorescent lights. If the plants prefer constant
heat or more heat than room temperature then I have some small heat mats
to provide the correct tempertures.
Then after the seeds germinate they're pushed into the greenhouse. I
keep the greenhouse at 45 degree nights but I have two large temperature
control heat mats for the young tender seedlings. Some plants prefer
the lower temperatures.
I keep moving the plants from warmer to ever cooler places. Many
plants seem to prefer cooler night temperatures especially temperate
perennials.
Be sure and check your seed packets and garden books, some plants
prefer to germinate either outside or in your refrigerator.
Heather, as to whether to use cool or warm fluorescent or full
spectrum fluorescence is something that I ponder while sowing seeds.
Cool and warm fluorescent are certainly cheaper than the full
fluorescent. If you were growing your seedlings under fluorescence for
any length of time you probably should use the full spectrum. But if
you are just germinating then moving the plants to better light use the
cheaper cool and warm combination.
Good luck. Isn't seed starting addictive?
Best, Vicki.
