In the backyard greenhouse, I installed an unsheilded halogen ander a
bench so that I could utilize the space underneath for growing something
beyond shade lovers. On day, in my need to crawl under there for
something, I noticed that the wood supporting brace to the benchtop was
burned to charcoal halfway thru. So, yes, if you put it within 4 inches
of wood, it could easily start a fire. They get extremely hot. Burning
out? Nah, I've had my HPS and halogen for a number of years.
