To add to the discussion of growing Hosta from seed- let's not forget
that while this genus has become a hybridizer's dream, species Hosta
do exist. The second aspect to remember is that Hosta are notoriously
promiscuous, putting even Dianthus & Aquilegia to shame. So, unless
your species are grown in relative isolation, anything is possible.
While I play around with thousands of hybrid Hosta seedlings every
year in my seed business and nursery with very interesting results, I
have also had very consistent results with the true species. Our
batches of Hosta sieboldiana (one of my favorites in any event) have
produced entirely true seedlings over a period of 7-8 years.
