In Canada I've never heard of a problem with the law raiding gardens because
of soniferum poppies. They are certainly present in many peoples' gardens,
as beautiful and naturalizing as they are. I'm not sure of their legality
here, but I imagine the laws regarding cultivation for the purposes of opium
production are similar.

I read an interesting article about soniferum poppies in Harper's last year.
According to the author the US law is somewhat vague and depends on the
gardener's awareness of the the poppies identity. To score them as is done
in opium collection would be a dead giveaway of this, but to simply grow them
for their beautiful flowers isn't. If anybody asks what kind of poppies they
are just say "What poppies?" ;-) Otherwise I don't think you have to worry
too much about getting raided.

Cheers!
