Starting seeds in the dark?

Hi everyone!  I'm starting some Fall seeds adn they need to be started in
the dark (accd to Dr. Deno), but what does that mean?  Shall I put them in
a paper bag?  Cover them with a board?  Place them in a shady area?  How
dark is dark???
