Nan,
Deno's data refer to seed started either in refrigerators [40 degrees F],
or at room temperature, all in plastic Baggies. I think he prefers to
believe that his refrigerator IS dark :)
When I read that seeds germinate best in dark, I just plant them deep
[perhaps 1/4 inch for big seeds like Cyclamen, and several seed diameters
for others.] I've also held such seed in a room in the basement that
isn't normally lit. It does not hurt to turn the light on for daily
inspections.
Conversely, seed requiring light,
should be surface sown, or with just a very light covering of grit.
