Here in Texas, if you plant bulbs too early, i.e. now...they'll bloom very
early and could get nipped by a freeze. I plant bulbs later, like in Dec or
Jan, after they've been in the fridge for the fall. Also, lots of
"perennial" bulbs only last nicely a few years here because we just don't
have the really cold winters that rejuvenate bulbs up north. But, I don't
mean to discourage bulb planting because they are lovely and enjoyable and
quite worth planting!
As for fertilizer, I just use compost and composted chicken manure, and the
bulbs do great.
