If large numbers of plants are required, the thick, woody rootstock can
be lifted in February or March and carefully cut into sections to fit
into 3.5 inch pots. On a commerical scale, soft-tip cutings are rooted
in a mist unit during April or May. These can be potted into 3.5 in
posts for planting out the next spring. They need careful overwintering
after potting up to avoid losses.

Plants raised from seed will usually have violet flowers, even if the
seeds were saved from strongly colored cultivars. Unless the aim is to
experiment, this is not a recommended method of propagation.

Award of Garden Merit.
