The canna are easily germinated by nicking or filing the seed and planted
in almost any type of media and kept moist. My own datura reseed freely
from seeds scattered in fall when they ripen. They seem to need at least
cold/cool or time stratification, since they never spout in the fall, even
from early ripening pods. They will also not germinate in the spring until
the weather is warmed sufficiently - early June for me here in Wisconsin.
In addition, it is also best to scatter the seeds where you want them to
grow, since they are not extremely fond of being transplanted, particularly
if they are older.
