Hi Tim,
I don't know anything specifically about phaseolus (it IS a legume), but on
one of my last trips to Costa Rica, I found the dried seeds of some sort of
vine legume. I finally got one to grow this year. And grow it did. Up and
up and up. Surely the bean from Jack in the Beanstalk. It sounds like
you're doing all the right things. One thing that occurred to me is that
many legumes require some sort of soil innoculant - a sybiotic bacteria
that lives in the roots and helps fix nitrogen. I have no idea whether
this would work (too late for this year, at any rate). Good luck.
