Here in Zone 6 Massachusetts, I started seeds in November in a 4" pot,
covered the soil with course sand, and left them in a covered cold frame
over the winter. When they germinated in the spring I put them under lights
until planting them in my nursery bed mid-May. They started to flower mid
to late August and are still at it.
I don't know if they need a cold period, but I didn't know what I was
planting at the time.
