Penny,
First thing, are your petunias hybreds? If they are, the seeds collected
won't produce the same flowers next season. Where did you get your
petunias? If you bought them at a commercial nursery, or at a plant center
like Wal-Mart, etc, they're probably hybreds.
If you still want to collect the seeds, allow the flower to stay on the
plant
as opposed to "dead heading" Once the bloom withers and falls off, look
closely
at the site on the stem where it was. There should be a small bud-like pod.
That's where the seeds are. Allow it to turn brown, and then carefully snip
it and
crumble the pod over a container. The tiny black seeds will fall into the
container.
Don't leave it on the plant for long after it turns brown; as the seed pod
drys, it
will split open to disperese the seeds.
I grow old timey petunias, I believe they're listed in Seed Savers as
"Trailing Petunias"
Some people also call them perinnial petunias, as they will reseed
themselves.
IMO, they withstand the heat better then the hybreds.
I can't help you with violas, they grow so prolifically around here, I've
never attempted
to collect seeeds from them!
I hope this helps
