Wtih all this talk about early spring, y'all might find this site
interesting. Click on the "migration maps" link, and you will see maps of
the U.S. with First Bird Reports for this year (and others) for
Ruby-throated and Rufous Hummingbirds. It makes a good gauge for how early
spring really is, as well as when to get your feeders out. It looks to me
that so far, the hummers are earlier than usual compared to 96-99, though I
haven't seen my first one yet here in East TN.
Relevance to shade gardening? I find that my hummers reliably show up when
my Dwarf Red Buckeye and Jacob's Ladder are in bloom, and they drink from
both.
