My H. 'Royal Standard' started developing woody central crown tissue (no
shoots where the woodiness develops) after about two years in my garden,
but the plant is running rampantly through the garden, so I view it as a
peculiarity but not a sign of ill health. Others growing that cultivar
have had the same experience. I have had three plants that have divided
themselves: where there was a single plant one year, two or three smaller,
less vigorous plants grew the following year. In the third year, the
plants did not sprout at all. A check of the dwindling plants revealed
firm but almost absent crown tissue, with roots way too small for a plant
of its age. There was no rot, 'mustard seed' bodies, marks from chewing,
etc. All of these were young divisions, and had been well cared for. Any
ideas?
