Well, one reason that I have to divide is because I planted some too close and leaves are overlapping other hostas and plants. I have a bad tendency towards this. But, I can use these extras in areas that I am starting to develop.

i have an old meat cleaver left from my dad's "butcher shop" days. the top
is flattened from concussions with a wooden mallet.
i also have a new chinese vege cleaver to break in this year.
i also sharpen the edge of my spade to divide troublesome clumps.
but i kinda agree with the BIG question of "why divide?"
let em get huge
unless theyre "bonsai", then still, let em fill the pot to the edges.
