Re: Moving Japanese Maple -- Sequel


Wouldn't recommend it...maples, as someone else said, are relatively
shallow rooted (more than 2" down, however :->) for one reason and
you'd likely smother it.  Another reason is that it would probably
not survive the rough and tumble of kids bouncing around it.

Better to move the sandbox to another location and plant the tree
where the sandbox used to be:-)

You will start to find tree roots around 6" down and to probably at
least 18" down with some below that.  Most tree roots function in the
top foot or so of soil - depending on the soil (deeper in loose,
sandy soils, shallower in clay soils or where there is hardpan) and
the nature of the tree's root system.
