I haven't "mowed" my Liriope but it has gotten a drastic haircut using the
weed-eater. A couple of years back, I think I can remember, we had a winter
- a real winter, you know with freezing temps, ice on the windshield and, oh
yes, I think I actually had to wear a coat. Anyway, in the spring I decided
to cut all my Liriope down by hand with a pair of scissors...well as soon as
my husband saw me he came out with his weed-eater (and safety glass, of
course) and took the "grass" down to about 2" or so. Came back
beautifully....the Liriope actually had a bit of "bounce" back, the blades
seemed to stand more erect.
My neighbor recently (spring '99) pulled out all of 20 year old (tired)
Legustrums and redesigned and planted her "mustache" garden in the front of
her home. She chose to use the variegated Liriope instead of the solid green
(I think some refer to it as Aztec Grass). What a beautiful "grass,"
offering much more contrast and "light" to her shady front border.
