Thanks for the 101 on Fertilizers.  I agree with all.   I would add that the
container plants mentioned are treated differently.  If you disdain added
commercial fertizilzers in favor the compost thing it will take time to
create a fertile friable soil.  But - in containers fertilizers are necessary
if you want a big healthy blooming container all summer.  Landscapers doing
those pots use time-release products but home gardeners can use Miracle-Gro
(or K-Grow or Rapid-Gro) in a weak solution ofter through the summer.

When you dump those containers in the fall the pots will be crammed with
roots kept to container size. Most of the container plants are annuals or
plants grown as annuals, not kept through the winter.  Since they are only
temporary residents getting the best you can from them requires fertizilizer.
