I wholeheartedly agree with Claire and the others who enjoy plants from
many areas of the world. To me, this eclecticism is part of why
gardening is so wonderful. I personally enjoy knowing that a relative
of my plant might have originated in the Himalayas or the
Mediterranean. It is rather like accepting, participating, in the
richness of the world and its variety, as well as its unity. When I
meet gardeners from other countries I feel pleased and connected. If we
were all growing only plants native to our exact areas, we would have
less in common. Such enjoyment of private gardens can only lead others
to appreciate the natural world in general. Now planting and constantly
mowing grass lawns and golf courses around the world is another
question.
