Re: "Native Plants"

Hi
I haven't seen all of the emails about native plants and cannot find the
original (have been outside rather than at the computer). I agree that
there is no "moral superiority" in having a garden with only native
plants; homes are not nature preserves. That said, I would hope that
serious gardeners would support efforts in nature preserves and public
parks to eradicate non-native invasive plants and preserve or restore
native plants...in preserves all areas and in public parks demonstration or
educational areas.
I also hope that you all will be reading about plants that are invasive
and that you will avoid planting them in your gardens.....you may be able
to contain them in your gardens, but most of them can escape (birds and
winds carry seeds) and populate areas in which they are not wanted and
destructive. An example would be Lythrum salicaria; it may be a beautiful
flower but it is illegal to sell it in Indiana because when it escapes it
creates a monoculture and crowds out all other plants....if you have
driven in upstate New York or other northeastern states you will know what
I mean. If there is a native plant/wildflower society in your area you
could contact it to check on what plants create the most serious problems
in your area.
