<<<I have a particularly shady area that I'd very much like to get covered
so those wonderful little neighborhood angels do not find it so easy to see
into my yard and throw things at our dogs. :) To be perfectly honest, the
key to our desire on this is fast growth and something that's fairly thick
for the off season -- berries are a plus>>>
James,
Holly can tolerate some shade and grow at a relatively fast rate - spines on
the leaves can be a tad painful for those "angels" you speak of. I'm having
good luck with Mahonia but it is slower. Euyonomous can become quite
sizable and dense but seed everywhere and can become a real pain - keeps
leaves here (northern KY/Cincy area) through late winter though they look
trashy. My neighbor has it growing between our properties, and though I
personally hate it, it is very functional and a good place for refuge for
the birds.
Regarding those "angels" - I don't know what your neighborhood situation is,
but their parents need to be spoken to. I have a low tolerance level for
other's misbehaved kids.
<<<I also have another area -- one that is somewhat woodland and gets little
to no direct sun and another that
gets dappled (same as above). >>>
Try ferns, astilbe, hosta, hellebores, and the like. Personally, I have a
LOW level of tolerance for messing with seeds - especially ferns.
