A great larval perennial which is an attractive plant also is bronze fennel.
One year I had as many as 10-15 butterfly chrysalises on the fennel.
However, the wrens found a lot of them. I have a semi-shady garden and get
quite a few butterflies each year. I don't think you have to have full sun.
They do seem to like the hostas quite a bit.
