Re: Chipper-shredder

I can't remember the name of my bright red chipper. It was second
hand and worked fine for a year or two. Then it cost a lot of time
and some money on repairs that didn't make it work right.

Then I discovered our municipality keeps about a dozen huge
containers at the municipal yard for homeowners to dump garden waste
in. We are allowed to take one pickup load a day, free. So now I
take all my branches there. I pile them up, jump on the load, pile
more, jump more, then tie them securely. The first time I did this,
a crosswind came up and my load landed on the highway. I noticed
that I was able to see out of my rearview mirror suddenly, and that
the cars behind were changing lanes or moving on to the shoulder.
Now I take the back route, as well as tying securely, and I haven't
lost so much as a twig since. I have never kept track of how many
trips I make - at least 30 per year, I guess.

It is so pleasant to just drop all the branches off, knowing that
they will be composted in a large facility. Chipping my own was
always horribly noisy, with gas fumes. We'd be wearing safety gear -
boots, eye and ear protection, heavy gloves, but even so it was
unpleasant - not just for us but for the neighbours too.
