<<<Hey, great conversation, but I'm really interested in suggestions for a
chipper-shredder! Can you guys change the name to this thread?>>>
Hi Diann,
My husband and I bought a chipper/shredder from Sears for about $350 about
10-12 years ago. We get it serviced every spring and it has performed
beautifully for us! Takes branches up to 2+ inches in diameter. NO (well,
almost none) yard wastes goes in the trash. All leaves in the fall and
branches are shredded and go into the compost pile. The smaller pieces
compost SO much faster!
A couple of years ago (1999) I emptied the whole compost bin into an area
that I was going to start growing bearded iris. We have a LOT of clay in
our soil so I thought the compost would be a good additive. I planted my
iris later that summer and in the spring of 2000 they were up to my waist
(I'm 5'9") with HUGE blooms! They were so big that first year, I divided
them the next spring (2000) and you should see them again THIS spring!
Anyway, back to the chipper/shredder - my point was that I got compost
quicker with it. Check out Sears. I just LOVE my chipper/shredder. It is
a royal pain to haul out. It is loud and obnoxious. I'm a filthy, dusty
mess after using it all day. But when I see my iris (and other plants that
have benefitted from the compost), makes it ALL worth it.
