I've read the buttermilk recipe before...never tried it, but have
moved countless yards of moss from gravel drive to where I wanted it
to grow...only to have it die on me. Finally acquired Schenk's moss
gardening book and learned that mosses have fairly specific
requirements...you can't get a moss from really damp gravel in part
shade to grow on fairly dry clay in full shade, just as Sue's list
says.
Schenk said the buttermilk recipe didn't work??? He also pointed out
that moss spore is in the air everywhere and if the conditions are
suitable for it, it will grow.
Claire...you do sound sort of over mossed. Have you thought of
opening a moss nursery? :-)
Personally, I love moss, except for the species that loves to inhabit
seed pots...I just pull that one out...have tried growing it
somewhere in the ground and had no luck with that. Every once in a
while, I find a lovely fat clump of it. I try to save them. I have
had (so far) luck moving a lump of clay covered in a beautiful moss
to another location where I could enjoy it. It does not seem to
realize it was moved...yet.
